03 profile

Shanly has a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture from the University of British Columbia and a B.A. in Art History & Literature from McGill University. She also spent a year abroad studying Interior Design at “Istituto per l’Arte & Il Restauro” in Florence, Italy. This breadth of education provides the foundation from which Shanly imaginatively integrates nature, art and culture to sculpt beautiful outdoor spaces.

After living and working as a landscape designer for almost ten years in the New York area on parks, commercial and residential projects, culminating at the award-winning Manhattan-based firm Mathews Neilsen Landscape Architects, Shanly returned to Toronto where she brought her timeless yet dynamic aesthetic and launched ARNETT OUTDOOR STUDIO in 2010.

AOS designs mainly residential landscapes in the urban and rural milieux. Additionally, in 2020, AOS and DenegriBessaiStudio co-founded a prefabricated building company providing custom four-season garden studios which further integrate and enhance the liveable space of the house and its landscape within the context of a dense urban environment.

04 how we work

Shanly’s holistic design process starts with a Master Plan that combines a technical practice with a creative approach to understanding the spirit of the place. By cultivating a deep understanding of how her clients wish to inhabit and experience their space, AOS customizes landscapes that evoke a visceral experience in nature.

Master Plan

(A) Site Analysis to assess the scope of the project by components:
  • Initial On-Site meeting to discuss the programming and vision for the landscape.

  • Site Conditions: Opportunities and Constraints of the property.

(B) Site Plan & Design Concept Sketches:
  • A Concept Landscape Plan of the site will be provided with preliminary grading, elevations and/or perspective sketches to help visualize and make informed decisions about design details.

  • On-site design meeting to review the sketches along with choices of materials and an estimated/rough project budget.

(C) Design Refinement
  • Final Master Plan with a budget, based on discussions and feedback, for approval.

Final Landscape Design Drawings and Details

  • Scaled drawings that will provide the specifications for the technical details of the landscape layout allowing for accurate timelines, installation process and budgeting,

  • Includes: grading, paving, planting, and irrigation. We can help to further customize the space with lighting, furnishings, water features, sculpture, seasonal planters and maintenance plans.

Construction Administration

To make sure that the landscape construction project is successfully executed, Arnett Outdoor will:

  • Provide the appropriate team of sub-contractors for the project.

  • Source materials and plants - Stone Yard and Nursery visits etc.

  • Co-ordinate with contractors during all phases of construction work: demo, site prep, hard-scape layout, special features, planting, irrigation & lighting.
